Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Before producing our music video we analysed existing products in order to gain knowledge of the conventions that are used in the music indusrty. By gaining this knowledge it enabled us to both use them in order to connect with our audience and also challenge them in order to make our video stand out from the rest and make it stick in the viewers mind. One of the first conventions of the drum ans bass genre is that there is often use of alcohol and sometimes drugs in the corresponding music videos. This is due to the fact that the target audience can relate to this behaviour as stereotypically they partake in such activities on a typical night out whilst listening to this genre of music. Therefore we decided to include drug and alcohol use in our own video to attract the target audience. We decided that we would use this behaviour as a cause for the main characters demise which recipricates real life consequences. This was heavily influenced by The prodigy video of 'Smack My Bitch Up'. The image from the video on the left shows the character drinking recklessly and the outcome is not favourabke. By using this convention the audience is familiar with what they are seeing and can identify it as a piece to which they are interested in.
Furthermore during our research we soon realised that to create and edgy piece and convey the characters life spiralling out of control we had to make sure that the majority of our shots were made with the camera being unsteady. This is common in drum and bass videos as the movement of the camera has strong links to the music that is being played. If the camera movement was very still and controlled then the audience would feel as though the situation they are watching unfold will also be under control, which is not what we wanted to portray. Furthermore the pace of the music would not fit and therefore it would be hard to engage our audience and make our video memorable. Also by using unsteady camera shots and combining that with fast paced editing we were able to create a lot more tension in the narrative and therefore the audience can put themselves in the same situation and feel how the character feels in the video. This helps the audience feel as though this video can teach them how to handle situations of adversity and realise this is not the way, leaving a lasting impression on the audience making the video hard to forget. Furthermore the more action that is going on at a fast pace the more likely that the audience will not get bored. The situation changes often in our video and the audience are kept right on the edge of their seat through the pace of the action, they are lead to believe that the character is heading in the right direction before the tragic end which puts an extra interest into our video as the audience are touched emotionally by the death of the main character. We also felt it was necessary to match the pace of the editing exactly to that of the music so that when it slows down so does the pace of the editing. This is in order for the audience to follow the story smoothly and allow them time to digest what they see as the story goes on. This is a feature I found common in the music videos I analysed therefore we used it in our video. Also at the start of every music video the band name and song title come up on the screen so naturally we chose to do this to make our video look professional. Also as i identified in the Coldplay video i analysed when the song is trying to convey a sad meaning and the mood is rather sombre you rarely see bright flamboyant costumes and scenery. The mood in 'the scientist' is similar to our trailer so we followed the same style and kept the characters costume subtle as well as the choice of location. One of the conventions that we challenged in our genre was that most drum and bass videos do not have a strong narrative to them. We decided to give our video a very clear narrative in order to captivate our audience and make our piece original. By doing this the audience can see how the song reflects the predicament our main character is in and how the mood reflects this. With most music videos in this genre you often simply see people enjoying the song being performed live at a gig and therefore there isnt anything the audience sees that engages them emotionally. This is shown in the original video for the song. This type of shot would be difficult for us to achieve as there wouldnt be a location or the manpower to carry out such a shot. Moreover another way in which we challenged conventions was that we ensured the the narrative was clearly related to the lyrics of the song. This is very uncommon in the genre as there are very rarely many lyrics to link a narrative to but our decision was based upon the fact we wanted to engage the audience on a personal level and allow them to use our piece as a way of aiding them in their own life. This connection that we aim to make with the audience allows the video to stick in their heads and appeal to a wider variety of people. I believe that we used the core conventions of the drum and bass genre to make it clear that this was the audience we were appealing to, but took it one step further by giving the audience something extra than just music. Making our media product more original and influential.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

We were keen to encourage a common theme throughout our music video and our promo pack in order for the audience to recognise the affiliatio
n between the two. As we are appealing to a younger audience the design of the promo pack is edgy and minimilistic. We used dark colours in order to convey the depair and sombre mood of the narrative and also the lyrics of the song. This is also reflected in the video which allows the audience to immediately identify what they are about to see. Furthermore in order to make the cover seem more modern and trendy we used an effect around the edge of the image to make it seem worn. This represents the image being cool and a youthful modern image. This represents our target audience as they are mainly interested in the quality of the music and do not need a persuasive image to inspire them to listen to the song or watch the video. This is why we aimed for a minimilistic theme as we are simply trying to say we are about the music too. Furthermore after reviewing existing products we felt that the power of reputable reviews shown on a CD cover reiterates the quality of the music and therefore allows the target audience to pick this out as something they are interested in whilst drawing in a wider audience through fans of those who reviewed the song. By making the promo pack simple in design and the story of the video relatively easy to follow albeit the surprise at the end it gives the products more of a professional feel and epitomises the theme of less is more. We let the music speak to the audience as this is what they are interested in. This common theme is what makes the combination of the two complement each other and also allows them to draw in the audience.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

The feedback we recieved from our target audience helped shape the structure and the content of both our video and our promo pack. We aimed our questionnaire at both ma
le and female individuals aged 18-24 as this was our main target audience. One of the main points that we grasped from our research was that it was essential for the timing of the editing and the pace of the song were matching in order for the story to be easy to follow. We found that most found the song overpowering when faster than the transition between shots particularly in the drug dealing scene. This would dampen the meaning of the narrative and therefore could lose the connection with the audience so it was key for us to change this, something we did. Furthermore our research showed that females connected more with the narrative than males which was to be expected. It is very important that the audience can empaphise with how the main character is feeling after being left by his partner in order to find the piece memorable and we saw that this was more achievable with the female respondents. One of the most positive feedback we recieved was that we conveyed how the protagonist was being affected by the drink and drugs very convincingly as the resonse to how we maintained a balance between showing he was intoxicated whilst not making it seem unrealistic. It was important for us to emphasise the effect that the narcotics had on our character to illustrate the harm they cause and the danger they possess. For us to know that we made an impact with this let us know that we had achieved our goal of connecting with the audience in the way that they know not to handle a similar situation in this way. Also we learnt that needed to make it slightly more apparent that the main characheter was homosexual. This referred to the scene where we see his ex love interest with a girl. We found some thought it was unclear who the love interest was and the twist seemed slightly unconvincing. However due to lack of time we could not put further emphasis on this, it was a small minority who flagged this as an issue therefore we felt it wasn't necessary to make drastic changes as we still wanted his sexuality to come as a great shock to the viewer.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

The main piece of technology we used during the whole process was the online blog to show our research and planning and the finished product. The blog was used as a documentation of the steady progress made over a period of time illustration how each decision was planned and then produced in order to create the finished product. It was exactly the same method we used in our AS coursework so we were familiar with the technology. It is a much more efficient way of planning your work and to track progress than using a folder. Furthermore when researching existing texts youtube was a very useful tool. It enabled us to find all the videos to analyse in order to gain knowledge of all the conventions of our selected genre. It also allowed us to upload our finished product onto youtube and then by embedding the code posting them onto our blogs. It was very helpful whilst illustrating examples of the conventions we found as the video can be paused a print screened onto my blog in order to show what i was talking about.
Another key bit of technology we used was the Mac computer. This handled everything such as posting our progress onto blogspot to editing the ra
w footage we shot. I have worked with the mac since my GCSE and it is a very quick and efficient way to edit our footage and also edit the images for the promo pack. The software that we used to edit our footage was Premier Pro CS4. This was a new bit of technology for me and we were instructed by our teacher how to use all the tools to cut footage and add in special effects etc. The software was easy to use and allowed us to edit all our footage quickly and also cut the length of our song which was more difficult to keep it in time with the editing. We found putting in effects very useful after much experimentation. The use of the software taught us that we had to film far more than we first realised and that most of the footage we shot we didnt even use. After many weeks we had created our finished piece whilst using this software. The equipment we used for filming was a Handheld video camera, the charger and also a tripod. The tripod whilst useful for still shots was not necessary for all of our filming as we wanted the camera to have a lot of movement in most scenes to portray the choas unfolding. We were given instruction on how to use the equipment as this was new territory for all of us.

Our Music Video

I havent been able to put the video on here as it was removed by youtube however there is a link for it on the goffs media blog

Magazine Advert

We wanted to create a theme running through the CD digipak and magazine advertisement. This is why we used two of the images from the digipak in the advertisement. Our largest image is the one that is used as the frontcover of the CD. If a target audience sees this they will then relate it to the CD they see in the shop and therefore identify it is 'watercolour' by Pendulum. Some of the text are slightly rotated as this gives the advert something different that just boring striaght text. However, it would look strange if we rotated all of the text which is why some are straight. There is a balance between the two. We added conventions to our magazine advertisement including the name of the band, the name of the single and a website. Another convention is reviews and star ratings from a critics. This not only makes the magazine look realistic but also promotes the band and single. When the target audience reads that a professional is giving praise, it will give them the confidence to buy it. We included a combination of reviews praising the single and actual band. We used a different text for the reviews to clearly seperate it from the other text. We followed the previous convention of less is more in terms of the drum and bass genre as this is what attracts the target audience. This meant keeping the design very simple and minimilistic to emphasise that this is about the music and thats what will sell the CD.

Finished Digi-Pack

This is our final product for our CD digipak. This includes the front cover of the cd case, the left hand side of inside the case and a back cover. When pictured together there is clearly a colour theme running through all 3 parts. These are gloomy, dark colours, mainly black. Black is usually representive of the an indie genre and also drum&bass genre. This relates to the song 'watercolour' as it combines both, but mainly drum&bass. The colour black creates a very modern, edgy, blunt appearance. This relates to the target audience. In the second image, the crowd has a yellow/gold colour and there is also bright lights. This adds vibrancy to the image and contrasts to the black. The loud, exciting colours reflect the target audiences personality. The second and third image both entail the majority colour of black. To make sure our digipak didn't look dull, we decided to use a different colour scheme for the front cover. The main colours for the front cover are dark greens, dark yellows, blue and white. It was important to create an eyecatching front cover as this is the first thing a customer will see of the CD in a shop. Even though the other images are classy and modern, they will not stand out amongst other CD's. Even though the colour scheme of the front cover is different to the other two, it was still important to create a dark appearance for it to relate to the other images and to the song. We also matched the colours in the front cover to the font used. We didn't want to include a lot of writing as it would take emphasis away from the image. The dark colour theme of our digipak represents the depression and distraught in our music video. Another noticable thing is the theme of simplicity. When analysing existing Pendulum digipak's, we discovered that the majority of them are very simple but still effective. This is made apparent in our digipak. We wanted our digipak to look realistic and professional. Therefore we used common conventions including, reviews from music magazines, title of the song and band, a barcode, a list of the songs on the CD, company and production names, company logos and a spine.

Images For Our Digi-Pack

Analysis of Existing CD Digi-packs

We decided to anaylse an existing cover from the band whose song we made the video to. This was to gain an understanding of not only the drum and bass genre's way of attracting audiences but the band specifically. This is so we could make ours look as proffessional an appealing as possible to our target audience

The first most noticable thing about this digipak is that it is fairly simple. On the front cover only one image is used and therefore is the main focus. It is given more space and emphasis than the name of the band which is highly unusual as it is the bands name that sells the CD. The same image is used on the back cover but with a decreased opacity to make the song titles stand out. The colours used are quite vibrant and therefore catch the eye of the audience and represents their interests. Another significant thing to mention is that the actual band, Pendulum is not featured in the digipak. This is a common covention with the drum&bass genre. This digipak is fairly simple but still effective. The design suggests that the band is not necessarily important and that it is simply the music that carries this through with the fans which is something we will look to address in our own design. There are also the usual formalitites that you see on any cover, the company logos and the barcode. Conventions like this will make our back cover appear more realistic.

What needed re-filming

Whilst editing our footage we realised that our detailed shot by shot storyboard would not last the whole song. We decided that a combination of extra scenes and cutting the song down slightly would be the best option. This included shots of the main character drinking alcohol and looking at it after he finished and it dropping in slow motion. The scenes where the main character is destroying his room as a result of being dumped, we filmed him pretending to hit a wall with a guitar in order to add emphasis to him being on a path of self-destruction. We thought when editing it would look more powerful if we increased the speed. However, we then realised it wouldn't go with the song as the first part of the song is slow. We then decided to put a slow motion effect onto it like the other clips we used, however there wasnt a sense of realism and so we decided to replace the scene. We filmed the main character throwing clothes which hits the camera. When put in slow motion this looked a lot better then the guitar and flowed with the other clips. We encountered several problems with lighting aswell. As a lot of our scenes are outdoors we depend on the natural light, however due to the time of year there was not a long window of time to get this done as there was a small amount of time where lighting would be consistent. A particular problem was bridging the time passage between the light scenes and the fire scene. We decided to show the main character looking at his watch as the hands moved. We significantly increased the speed to show time passing by. The watch scene would be after the last light scene and before the dark scenes. The watch shows a change in time without it being a complete jump from one to the other. The dark scenes also included point of view shots. This shows the main character out of control due to drugs as the camera is handheld and shakey.

Editing

In order to edit our music video we used Premiere Pro CS4. Firstly, we had to import our footage into premiere pro after uploading it from the camera. This enabled us to see a list of our clips which we could then play in the preview window. Once we were satisfied with what clips we wanted to use, you drag the clip into the playing area. This will now be show in the right window which shows the actual music video. We decided it would be more efficient to drag all our clips down, rearrange them and then add transitions and effects after. This enables us to see any gaps that we would need to film again. This was made apparent to us. It was important to cut down a lot of clips as most of them were too long. We then imported the song the same way as the footage but dragged it down to the audio section. It was important to mute the sound from the footage so that you could hear the actual song. Once we had arranged a lot of the clips we decided to start adding effects and transitions. Our song is quite depressing and sad so we thought it would the footage would relate to the song if we decreased the brightness. We changed this by going on the tab colour and correction and then brightness and contrast. Another effect we used is changing the speed of the clip. The pace of our song is quite up and down, starting quite slow, then speeding up and at the end slowing down again. Therefore when it was slow paced we decreased the speed of the clip so it would make a slow motion style effect. For the fast paced music we increased the speed to make a lot of short, fast shots. This creacted hecticness and excitement. When deciding on transitions, wse found that we used a lot of similar transitions. This is because we found that a lot of them did not suit our music video. Using the same ones several times created continuity and looked more professional. The main transitions we used were dip to black, cross dissolve and additive dissolve. We especially liked additive dissolve because during the transition, the previous and next clip blend in together and when going to the next clip you still see the previous clip as the opacity decreases. When arranging our footage we realised that it would be a lot harder to fit three and half minutes than we previously thought. We refilmed numerous times and thought we had a lot of footageand then found that we still had gaps to fill. There was only one way to overcome this and this was by cutting sections of the song out. This was made possible because a lot of the song is repetitive. When the pace of the song slows down for the second time, shortly after the pace fastens up again. We wanted the end to finish with a slow pace so we cut it before the pace fastens up again. So that the song didnt end blunty we gradually quietened it down at the end. The song was still too long so we cut out other sections that were repeated. This was a very difficult process that required patience and perserverance. It was very hard to cut the section at the right point. Using the razor tool you select the start of the part of the song you don't want and then another mark up to where you want it. You then slect it and delete it. Another thing that proved to be difficult was matching up the footage with the right part of the song. This again was overcome by patience. The last thing we added was 'Pendulum - Watercolour' and 'New Media Solutions' in the left hand corner of the first clip of the music video. This made it apparent that it is a music video and is a common convention of existing music videos. We didn't want it to take emphasis away from the video so we decreased the opacity and made it dissolve away after a few seconds. By adding this convention we found that our music video looked more realistic and professional.

Location Analysis

These three images are of one of the main locations we will be using. This is the place where our main character will come after he sees his ex with somebody else. The dull tones of the scenery reflects his mood and the sombre theme that shows despair. This is shown with the natural wood colours and the dull green of the leaves. Also by the dull brickwork and the graffiti represents a run down area, which is where the character feels he belongs as a run down human being. The first picture is the most influential to show what sort of place this is and so will be used as an establishing shot. The others will show fast paced shots including smashing bottles to symbolise a choatic atmosphere to portray his chaotic emotions.

These two locations reflect the same theme of despair with dull colours and their general appearence of nothing being appealing. We will use a very unsteady point of view shot of the main character running whilst he feels he is being followed, shown by similar shots from behind the protagonist. This is to symbolise him running away from his troubles and therefore running away from the places that reflect how he is feeling on the inside. This allows the audience to empathise with the character as everybody has felt the desire to escape problems, enabling them to become more involved in the narrative.

Detailed Storyboard

Audience Feedback

Our questionnaire included open ended questions which made it far more suitable to be done on paper than just have multiple choice options on a blog. We asked mainly about what conventions we had used and how we can improve the parts that are not so conventional. We gave our questionnaire to 18 late teenagers, both female and male, our target audience. The most important thing for us was that the viewers engage with the narrative of the video. It was very hard illustrating the story without making the twist obvious. Results from our questionnaire showed that the majority of people understood it. This reassured us that our story wasn't too confusing. However, responses suggested to us that it would be clearer if we included more footage of the ex boyfriend. We were encouraged to hear that the way we portryed the intoxication of our main character was very convincing, this was very important to us as we wanted to ensure we conveyed the message that this is not what to do in this situation and we didnt want to glorify his actions. We wanted the effects we used to give a realistic account of the consequences of doing such things. When the music was slow we used a slow motion effect and when the music fastened up we increased the speed of the shot. People also commented on the transitions between the shots "which made the music video flow". A lot of people expressed how they liked the variation of shots as it maintained their attention and was very interesting to watch. Thankfully all criticism we recieved was constructive and we were able to build on such views to make our product more successful. This included ensuring that the pace of the editing matched that of the music. We were told this was key in order for it to be easy to follow the narrative without the pace of the music overpowering it, taking the attention away from what was going on in the video. It took time but we managed to maintain a good balance with the music and the editing.

Target Audience Analysis

This is an example of our target audience. Youthful males and females mostly at university studying more creative subjects. People that like to break the mould and do things a little different, for example going to the beach in winter clothes with a pinwheel. These are the type of people that will be interested in drum and bass music and their usual activities would include going out to clubs drinking frequently and therefore be able to connect with our song choice. These particular students are regulars at the Creamfields Festival which is know for dance, drum and bass genres etc. Therefore it is apparent the are familiar with the party scene. There dress sense differs from being out there and different to fitting in with the latest trends that would be sold in such shops as Topshop and All Saints for example. The Video would appeal to both men and women as the main focus is still the genre of music for those less emotionally involved (typically men) but also has a strong focus on the narrative which will appeal more to the women but there is something for everyone.

Coursework Option

After looking at existing music videos me and my group have decided that we would rather make a music video than a film trailer. This is because a music video allows you to change conventions within a genre however still make the video easy to identify as part of that genre. Therefore allowing us to create a more original piece, Whereas with film trailers if conventions are altered too much the end product could fall into a different genre which would prevent the audience being able to identify with it.

Analysis of Existing Music Videos - Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up

Story: There is an apparent narrative in this music video. It tells the story of a person on a night out drinking heavily and getting into all sorts of trouble through their point of view. Most videos in this genre do not have narratives to them therefore this video stands out and gives the audience something different. The narrative leads to a twist at the end giving the video a clever edge but most importantly something to remember it by so that it sticks with the audience
Setting: The video takes place in various locations throughout including clubs in built up areas, high streets and grubby flats which is inkeeping with the genre of the music and the lifestyles of its audience. The places featured are the typical locations that a night out would include for the target audience
Characters: The main protagonist is not revealed until the end of the video where we see the twist that the character is actually a woman, something that shocks us as they behave in the manner of a drunken man. The band does not appear in the video which whilst unusual for them is very common amongst the dance genre. There are other unimportant characters throughout the video which are just those the woman encounters on her night out. However the woman who comes back to the flat plays a significant part in making the twist more shocking as it shows the character is homosexual
Costumes: It is hard to distinguish the costume for the characters as the video is often blurred and fast moving however we see that they are dressed for a typical night out clubbing with most of the women dressed in revealing outfits. This allows the audience to relate to the video as they do the same things as they see in the video however on a more civil scale presumably
Lyrics: There a few lyrics in the song as it is a dance song however the lyrics 'smack my bitch up' have some reference to what is happening in the video as there are fight scenes
Special Effects: The main effect used is blurring the camera and spinning rapidly. This is necessary as it emphasises how drunk the main character is which is essential as we cannot see her until the very end
Camera Angles: We only have one camera angle throughout the video and that is a point of view shot of the main characters night. This is essential to sustain the narrative and carry through with the twist in order to shock their audience and keep the video in their minds. the movement of the camera is very fast and sudden which fits in with the genre of music but also emphasises the characters intoxication

Analysis of Existing Music Videos Coldplay - The Scientist

Story: There is a clear narrative that is told in reverse. A car accident has killed his girlfriend and he has walked away in despair. Playing the video in reverse allows the video to be interesting as you are wondering what has happened in the past that is so significant. As you do not find out what happened until the end it allows Chris Martin to appear to be a hero as he is walking along as the main man in the viedeo, it seems there is nobody else of significance
Setting: The video uses many outdoor locations that are quiet and subdued which reflects the sombre mood of the video
Characters: The main character is Chris Martin. This is because he is the front man of the group and therefore he is the main one that the fans would like to see, he is the one who will attract the audience. There is also the character of the girlfriend whom is there to correspond with the story and make the video interesting. The target audience of Coldplay would want to see a love interest as they are used to a strong narrative and romance and passion is a strong element of their music. Therefore the audience is more attracted to the video and will remember it.
Costume: The characters both wear standard trendy clothing which represents the bands image and the genre of music. Aiding the audience to identify the video as Coldplay's
Lyrics: The video fits the lyrics as its a sombre song to go with the theme of a tragic accident in the video. The mood of the music is a romantic, sad mood and the lyrics correspond with this which is conventional to some music videos
Special Effects: The video is shot with Chris Martin singing the lyrics backwards so that when the footage is played in reverse it appears that he is moving backwards but singing the words perfectly. The slow reverse movement fits in with the mood of the song which makes it easier to understand. The way it was achieved meant Chris Martin had to leanr the whole song backwards to achieve the effect
Camera Angles:

Analysis of Existing Music Videos Weezer - Buddy Holly

Story: In this video the plot is not very complex. The band are performing in the diner in an episode of 'Happy Days'. This is the selling point of the video as the show is very famous and appeals to the fans they have. Fans will think that the idea of having Weezer performing in the episode is cool and therefore it sells the video and the song to them.
Setting: There is only one setting used in the video and that is Arnold's Cafe which is a famous location in the show. This would be the only way for the video to be made as it is simpler to combine the old footage from Happy Days with the new footage shot to look exactly like the original footage to get the designed effect. Also as the theme is that it is a scene in the show it is logical to use a recognizeable location so the fans can connect with it and undeerstand what is happening in the video
Characters: The main protagonists in the video are of course the band themselves as it is conventional to see them and the fans expect to see them so they know they are watching a Weezer video. Also to make the concept look authentic you see many of the Happy Days cast as some of the footage used in the video is the original show footage. This helps the audience identify with the show which is how the band are trying to attract the audience. You also see new footage of a crowd dancing which represents how the fans of the band would behave if they are there in the video. Making it easier for the audience to relate to the video.
Costume: The costumes used in the new footage are 70's dress to blend in with the original characters in the original footage to make it seem more authentic and the transition more fluid
Lyrics: Like many music videos the lyrics of the song do not match what is happening in the video at all and the song is completely unrelated to Happy Days
Special Effects: The special effects in this video are apparent as it is is the effects that have enabled the old footage to be combined with the new footage. The footage has been combined very effectively to make it look like the band are really in the episode. Also doubles of original characters are used when they are in the background shots or shots from behind, e.g. the double of 'Fonzie' dancing
Camera Angles: The most significant shots used in the video are the close ups of the band and the characters in the original show. This is because the close ups of the band members give the audience what they want by showing them the stars whilst reiterating they are in the episode. It also establishes the video as Weezer's. The close ups of the characters in the show make it obvious that the video is set in Happy Days and it shows the authenticity of the footage which appeals to their fans. Furthermore it also shows how clever the video is by mixing footage which their fans appreciate as this is an element of the band they like. The other significant shots in the video are the long establishing shots which capture not only the band performing but the guests in the diner in the episode. This shows the combination of footage whilst also further reiterating the band is in a tv episode.

Introduction

My name is Miles Williams and I am an A2 Media Studies student at Goffs School. For my A2 coursework i will be producing a music video. This blog will illustrate the steps i have taken in order to construct this video and detail the research i have completed to produce it. I will also be producing a Promotion package to accompany the video along with my group
